by News Staff Posted Jan 12, 2014 2:57 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Popular 17th Avenue bar shuts its doors Twenty-three years ago, Calgary’s Melrose Café & Bar opened its doors on 17th Avenue.Now, the self-titled “Heart of the Red Mile” has announced it is closing its doors forever.A release on the restaurant’s website said the owner will instead be focusing on the Cowboys Casino location.Scott Crockatt with the Calgary Chamber of Commerce said he didn’t see this coming.“The closure of Melrose certainly came as a suprise and we’re seeing some reaction to it on social media, in particular,” he said.There is no indication of what will be moving into the staple location on 17th Avenue near 7th Street SW, but Crockatt said there will be lots of interest.“I think this will be a rare opportunity for some business, 17th Avenue has very, very low vacancy rates, Calgary does in general,” he said. “I can’t say exactly how rare of an opportunity this is, but it’s certainly not frequent.”Melrose has been an active cheerleader for the Calgary Flames, and served as a hub during the team’s 2004 playoff run. read more
