North Coast Music Festival is heading into its eighth year of existence, and much like a fine wine, it simply gets better with age. This year’s lineup is a straight amalgamation of beats, vibe, old-school favorites, new-school favorites, funk, hip-hop, the weird, and everything in between. Once again set to take place Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 1st – 3rd) in Chicago’s Union Park, NCMF is the end of summer treat that gets it right year after year. What better way to get ready for the Chi-town throwdown than a playlist that will keep you going all summer long, in anticipation of one of the most diverse festival lineups of 2017? Progressive house stalwarts Deadmau5 & Eric Prydz are a sure bet to bring straight dance beats to the North Coast faithful, while Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley will bring the jamrock to illuminate your soul vibrations. Ween will deliver the brown, and Primus will bring the mud, as is always expected from the old-school favorites who are both witnessing a renaissance of sorts.Lettuce is one of the hottest acts in funk music and is delivering some of the most crushing live sets in music at this very moment, while STS9 has regained the momentum and full band synergy that made them one of the hottest acts in the early 2000’s. Ambient and downtempo pioneers Bonobo (coming hot to the scene with a live band) and Tipper are at the top of the list with what they are able to create in their respective crafts. Bob Moses is just gobs and gobs of Deep House goodness. If hip-hop is your thing, Gucci Mane serves up straight trap beats, with Lil’ Dicky crafting some comedic tales, and Post Malone flexing the narrative skills. If the jam is what gets you going, there isn’t a hotter act than Spafford on the scene, and it’s hard to argue that. Colorado-based SunSquabi isn’t far behind and have been giving crowds the feels with their undeniable electro-funk grooves witnessed on stage. If you’re a Grateful Dead fan, the question begs to be asked….is there really any ensemble properly transmitting the evolution of the material better than Joe Russo’s Almost Dead? The full NCMF lineup is absolutely insane and most importantly, diverse. If you are a true music fan, Chicago is the place to be this coming Labor Day weekend.Tickets for North Coast Music Festival are currently on-sale and can be purchased here. Oil major Chevron has joined its industry peers ExxonMobil and Total in recording a profit increase for the third quarter 2017 when compared to the prior-year period. Namely, Chevron on Friday reported earnings of $2 billion for the third quarter 2017, compared with $1.3 billion earnings in the third quarter of 2016.Included in the quarter was a gain on an asset sale of $675 million and an asset write-off of $220 million. Foreign currency effects decreased earnings in the 2017 third quarter by $112 million, compared with an increase of $72 million a year earlier.Sales and other operating revenues in the third quarter 2017 were $34 billion, compared to $29 billion in the year-ago period.“We continue to see improvement in the underlying pattern of earnings and cash flow,” said Chevron Chairman and CEO John Watson, who will be replaced at the beginning of February 2018 by Michael K. Wirth.“Cash flow is at a positive inflection point, with oil and gas production increasing and capital spending falling,” Watson added. “We’re completing projects that have been under construction and ramping up production, notably at our Gorgon LNG Project in Australia. And our shale and tight rock drilling activity in the Permian Basin is exceeding expectations.”“We expect this pattern to continue,” Watson commented. “Earlier this month, we announced first LNG production from our Wheatstone LNG development in Australia.”Chevron’s worldwide net oil-equivalent production was 2.72 million barrels per day in third quarter 2017, compared with 2.51 million barrels per day from a year ago.The company’s average sales price per barrel of crude oil and natural gas liquids was $42 in third quarter 2017, up from $37 a year earlier. The average sales price of natural gas was $1.80 per thousand cubic feet in third quarter 2017, compared with $1.89 in last year’s third quarter.Net oil-equivalent production of 681,000 barrels per day in third quarter 2017 was down 17,000 barrels per day from a year earlier. Production increases from shale and tight properties in the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico, and base business in the Gulf of Mexico, were more than offset by the impact of asset sales of 67,000 barrels per day, and normal field declines. The net liquids component of oil-equivalent production in third quarter 2017 increased 1 percent to 525,000 barrels per day, while net natural gas production decreased 13 percent to 932 million cubic feet per day primarily as a result of asset sales.Offshore Energy Today Staff

Jen Small / The Badger HeraldFor a team plagued by poor free throw shooting, Wisconsin didn’t act the part in the two overtimes against Iowa Wednesday night.Converting on 13-of-14 from the line after regulation and receiving a deadlock-breaking three pointer from freshman forward Sam Dekker, the Badgers (16-7, 7-3) beat the Hawkeyes (14-9, 3-7) in a double-overtime thriller at the Kohl Center, 74-70.It was Wisconsin’s first win against Iowa since a victory at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Feb. 9, 2011, as the Badgers snapped a three-game losing streak the Hawkeyes. Junior guard Ben Brust led all scorers with 18 points and fifth-year senior forward/center Jared Berggren put up a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds to pace UW in a game where both teams shot a lowly 33.8 percent from the field.“We just kept working,” Berggren said. “That was a tough battle out there. [Iowa is] a team that plays hard and they’ve had our number so we just kept fighting. To go two overtimes like that and make some mistakes … we showed some fight and did just enough to find a way to win.”Down nine with 6:18 left to play, Brust hit a clutch three pointer to spark a 11-2 Wisconsin run that tied the game with 1:24 remaining.Iowa’s Aaron White, a sophomore forward who finished the night with 13 points, stole a pass from fifth-year forward Ryan Evans and converted a three-point play of his own to put the Hawkeyes back on top with just 45 seconds remaining in regulation. After a 30-second timeout by Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan, Berggren missed two shots in the lane, but the ball ended up in the hands of guard Traevon Jackson, as the sophomore pulled up for a clutch cold-blodded three, receiving a friendly bounce from the rim and tying the game at 58-58.“To close that gap before the overtime, it was really gutsy,” Ryan said. “We made some shots and gave ourselves a chance.”After an Iowa timeout, the Hawkeyes set up a play for sharpshooter Josh Oglesby, who ran off a screen and caught the ball on the left wing. The look was clean from beyond the arc, but the shot rimmed in and out, as the Kohl Center breathed a collective sigh of relief as the game headed into the first overtime.Oglesby was quick to get back to work for the Hawkeyes, connecting on his first shot in overtime, giving Iowa a 61-58 lead. But, once again, the Badgers battled back, this time thanks to clutch free throw shooting from Berggren and Jackson. Neither team was able to convert a shot in the game’s final minute, as White missed a jumper and Berggren and senior forward Mike Bruesewitz both missed threes in the final seconds. After not playing any of the first overtime, Dekker was forced to check in after Bruesewitz was called for his fifth foul on a block.“I just had to keep myself mentally into the game,” Dekker said. “I couldn’t get down on myself. Coach said to me a couple times he kept those guys in for experience. Coach turned to me before the tip of second overtime and said to be ready because the guys were getting fatigued.”Dekker wasted little time making his presence and fresh legs felt, as the freshman gathered himself on the catch from a Berggren pass and drilled a three from the right wing.“He was wide open and he stayed loose over on the bench,” Ryan said. “If you watched him while he was sitting over there, bouncing his legs and staying ready.”The three proved to be a spark, as Berggren swatted the next Iowa shot attempt with Brust pulling in the rebound and drawing a foul.Wisconsin went 5-for-6 from the line in the final 31 seconds of the game to hold off an Iowa rally that cut the Badgers lead to just two points with five seconds to go. At that point the Hawkeyes elected to foul Evans, the Badgers worst free throw shooter at just 40 percent entering Wednesday night. But Evans surprised Iowa by calmly sinking both shots of his double bonus, icing any comeback hopes and sending the Badgers to their first win over the Hawkeyes in nearly two years.“They’re as tough as any team in the Big Ten,” Berggren said. “Every team is going to play hard, they showed a lot of fight. It’s a team that’s played extremely hard it was good to just keep fighting and find a way to get it done.”Notes: Wisconsin improved to 178-17 (.913) at the Kohl Center under Bo Ryan, including a mark of 88-10 in conference home games… Berggren’s double-double was his second of the season and just the second of his career… Brust recorded his ninth double-digit scoring performance of the season… The double overtime game was the first since the Badgers beat Eastern Kentucky in the 2005-06 season at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
The History of Sexbots in MoviesSexy Robots Help Cure Erectile Dysfunction Some of the first sex dolls were invented by Dutch sailors in the 17th century.Fast forward 4,000 years, and those seamen would probably endorse modern sex robots. And they wouldn’t be alone: New data from Internet-based market research firm YouGov suggests 49 percent of Americans expect that having sex with robots will become common practice in the next five decades.Unsurprisingly, adult men lead the charge—one in four (24 percent) would consider taking an automated lover. Fewer than 10 percent of women, meanwhile, are open to the idea. The statistics, published on Monday, reconcile with those released by the Foundation for Responsible Robotics (FRR) in July; they are also consistent with futurist Dr. Ian Pearson’s forecast that sex with robots will overtake human love-making by 2050.One in four men would consider having sex with a robot (via YouGov)Most Americans aren’t convinced that mechanical copulation should even be classified as sex (I did not have sexual relations with that robot). Only 14 percent of US adults would label the act as intercourse, and one in three liken it to simple masturbation.Which begs the question: Does having sex with a robot while in a relationship constitute cheating? The divided response split down the middle: 32 percent said yes, 33 percent said no. (One guess as to which gender voted which way.)The moral ambiguities of cyborg sensuality remain unclear.More people believe it is acceptable to get it on with a humanoid android versus a traditional robot. But a majority still find either exterior—synthetic character or motorized machine—objectionable.Unlike Arran Lee Wright and his wife Hannah Nguyen, whose smart sex doll Samantha is part of the family.“My children [aged three and five], they say, ‘Where’s Samantha?’” Wright said during a recent appearance on This Morning.Nguyen agreed, admitting that “We have fun with her.”“I have no worry about someone else actually there for Arran to have an affair. We don’t have to worry about some sort of disease,” she said on live television. “It’s fun to have her around.”YouGov’s robot sex survey, administered online between Sept. 26-27, includes responses from 1,146 adults (aged 18+). Test your own convictions with all eight original questions below:If it were possible to have sex with robots, to what extent would you consider having sex with one?And how important, if at all, would it be that the robot would resemble a humanoid (i.e. as opposed to a traditional mechanical robot)? To what extent do you think it would be morally acceptable or unacceptable for people to use a robot designed for sex if it resembled a humanoid or a traditional robot?Do you think that engaging in sex with a robot should be considered closer to resembling traditional intercourse, to masturbation, or neither? If someone were to pay to use a sex robot, would you consider that prostitution? If you had a partner who had sex with a robot, would you consider it cheating? When, if ever, do you believe using robots for sex will become a commonly accepted practice? To what extend do you feel that having sex with a robot is more or less safe, if either, than having sex with a human stranger?Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
