first_imgSoon, scholars worldwide will have an easier time creating, publishing, and sharing maps and other geospatial data, thanks to the release of WorldMap, an open source software platform that fills the growing niche between desktop mapping applications and more lightweight, nimble Web solutions.Developed by Harvard’s Center for Geographic Analysis, WorldMap allows scholars to share access to view and edit geospatial information. Unlike similar tools, WorldMap allows the use of large, detailed datasets, and supports a number of formats.First released in beta last July, the software already boasts 1,250 users from more than 100 countries. Users have contributed more than 1,700 mapping layers and created more than 500 map collections to support their research. The bulk of the best geographic data resides outside any single institution. WorldMap takes a unique approach to this challenge by providing the global community with a platform to meet its needs. By so doing, the system increases the amount of high-quality spatial data in the public sphere.WorldMap allows scholars to integrate information from diverse sources by making it possible to overlay data in users’ own computers with materials on the Web. The system also lets users incorporate paper maps, perform online digitizing, and link locations to other media. The system allows for collaborations that can range from small groups in which all participants have editorial rights to interactive publications for large audiences. The system is also designed to support the research process, by allowing information to initially be made private, before being opened to larger groups for refinement, and finally to be published or released to the public.Free and open to the public, WorldMap is cloud-hosted as well as open source, meaning new functions can be added to the system. A handful of new features are under development, including the ability to visualize change over time, searching place names for current and historic locations, and creating and editing online map layers.last_img read more

first_imgA subsidiary of Bermuda-based LNG carrier owner Flex LNG has entered into a long-term charter contract with Clearlake Shipping, part of Gunvor Group, for an LNG carrier newbuilding. As informed, the period under the time charter is up to ten years where the first five years are firm. The charter will commence following the delivery of the ship scheduled for August 2020. It will have elements of variable rate of hire across the charter period, Flex LNG said. The 173,400 cbm vessel to be employed under this time charter will be the hull 2479, which is being built at South Korean Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). Fitted with a high-pressure two-stroke slow-speed propulsion system (ME-GI), the vessel is also equipped with a full reliquifaction system (FRS) enabling a high level of operational flexibility given the low boil-off rate of 0.035% per day.The 96,000 dwt vessel will be named as Flex Artemis and will fly the flag of the Marshall Islands.“We are very pleased to enter into this long-term charter with … Gunvor which has been the most active LNGC spot trader in the burgeoning LNG trade. We are confident that our vessel will be very suitable for their trade given the very high technical specification of this vessel. This charter is also in line with our strategy of delivering incremental higher level of backlog as we are growing our fleet of vessels on the water,” Øystein M. Kalleklev, Chief Executive Officer of Flex LNG Management AS, commented.Flex LNG currently has six vessels on the water and an additional seven newbuildings under construction, which are planned for delivery between the second quarter of 2020 and the second quarter of 2021.last_img read more

first_img The same report claims that Madrid could potentially do a deal to sign the 17-year-old for a €60m deal and allow him to continue playing for the Ligue 1 club on a loan deal for the next season or two. The fact that Rennes would be able to potentially maintain their star for the next two years might allow them to negotiate his permanent exit for a reasonable sale. Real Madrid are plotting a move to sign Rennes star Eduardo Camavinga this summer to ensure no other clubs beat them to the deal. A report in Diario Sport outlines how interest from elsewhere – primarily from Paris Saint-Germain – means that Camavinga’s future is no longer certain due to his increased prominence.Advertisement Read Also: Lionel Messi gifts blind boy life-changing glassesHe has been a part of Rennes’ system since the age of 11 and is regarded to be one of the brightest prospects in French football.Born in Cabinda, Angola, Camavinga holds Congolese citizenship through his parents. first_imgRetired players of Asante Kotoko trounced their Hearts of Oak counterparts 3-1 in a friendly match at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday. The game, which was used to raise funds for charity and also contribute towards the welfare of the retired players of both sides, saw Kotoko registering all their goals in the first half with Isaac Boakye hitting a brace in the 20th and 42nd minutes, whilst Godwin Ablorddey also found target in the 27th minute.Hearts, however pulled one back from Ayittey Dormon, who took on the Kotoko defence to slot home in the ninth minute. The second half of the game was drab, compared to that of the first half, as most of the players were visibly tired; reducing incursions by both sides for the needed goals, but in spite of this, the “oldies” dazzled the crowd with their dribbling skills.Other players who featured for Hearts included Emmanuel Armah “Senegal”, Sam “Foyoo” Johnson, Jacob Nettey, Ishmael Addo, Amankwaah Mireku, Yaw Preko, Joe Addo and Ablade Kumah.Kofi Abbrey, Prince Polley, Mohammed Odoom, Frimpong Manso, Odartey Lamptey, Isaac Kwakye, Isaac Boakye, Olli Rahman, Godwin Ablorddey, Gariba Ibrahim, Hamza Mohammed, among others, featured for Kotoko.last_img read more

first_imgLast Thursday night was a night of firsts at BMTA. It was the first time that over forty referees turned up to blow a whistle – there were more referees than there were games! It was also the first time at BMTA that three lots of referees from the same family referee the same game. BMTA like doing things bigger and better, so not only did they have one game with all the referees from the same family, they had three!During the second time slot, the Davis family (pictured top), del Castillo family (middle) and the Zendler family (bottom) took to the field. Their teamwork on the field was strengthened by their family ties and they all enjoyed themselves.  In addition to these families of referees, there are a number of families with two referees. The growth in the number of family groups taking up refereeing highlights how well refereeing allows families to come together and share their sporting successes. To assist with the growth in popularity of touch refereeing amongst juniors, BMTA has also introduced the Top Gun program.  It allows junior referees who want to learn more about the art of refereeing, to be taught by some of the best referees and referee coaches in the game. Many of BMTA’s Top Guns are gearing up to referee at the Junior State Cup which will be held at Caboolture in July.Players and coaches are also noticing the effects of the Top Gun program. The Top Guns lead and show other referees the finer points of refereeing. In the last couple of weeks the Top Guns have been focussing on their penalty sequences, interchanging and scoreline movements and the results are clear for all to see.  There are some very enthusiastic referees coming out on a Thursday night at BMTA and the number of junior referees is growing. Kids are taking after their parents (and parents taking after their kids) and picking up a whistle and enjoying the thrill of refereeing. If you are interested in giving refereeing a go or if you would like to learn more about the Top Gun program please contact Julian Aitken on 0418 808 441 or [email protected] to Julian Aitken for providing the article content.Related Filesbmta_referees-pdflast_img read more

first_imgHeadshot of an Ohio State student.ohio state student broken neck osu.eduosu.eduEarlier this week, tragedy struck Ohio State’s campus when junior Austin Singletary passed away following the school’s annual Mirror Lake jump. Initial reports suggested that he’d been pulled from the water after suffering from cardiac arrest. Those reports now appear to have been incorrect.According to The Columbus Dispatch, the Franklin County coroner has “tentatively” determined that Singletary actually died of a broken neck – specifically, a C-5 vertabra fracture. Here’s more:The autopsy, which was done on Thursday, revealed a fracture of the C-5 vertebra, which would lead to paralysis of the arms, legs and diaphragm, causing death, said Coroner Anahi Ortiz. She said the injury was consistent with him hitting his head on something hard, such as the bottom of the lake or a rock.Ortiz said Singletary survived for about two hours before dying at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. She added that the results are “very preliminary” and could be modified once Singletary’s medical history is completely reviewed and toxicology results — which would show any drug or alcohol use — are available. That’s expected to be complete in about six weeks. As noted, the findings aren’t definitive. But as you can imagine, it’s becoming more and more likely that the 2015 jump will be the last. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Singletary’s family and friends.last_img read more

first_imgVANCOUVER – Eight organizations in British Columbia are joining forces to advocate for ride-hailing services in the province as soon as possible. The Ridesharing Now BC coalition has been formed by groups including the Vancouver Board of Trade, BC Business Council, Canadian National Institute for the Blind and San Francisco-based on-demand transportation company Lyft.A news release from the coalition says it has launched a letter-writing campaign to B.C. politicians calling for a competitive ride-hailing industry “that can deliver much-needed choice to B.C. passengers.”Supporters are directed to the www.ridesharingnow.com website, where they can sign and email a letter to their representative in the legislature calling for speedy introduction of ride-hailing services.Coalition spokesman Ian Tostenson says politics, rather than public opinion, is driving decision making in Victoria. He says the government sets the conditions that will attract ride-hailing services to B.C., and warns it should not be taken for granted that companies such as Lyft and Uber will inevitably operate in the province.“The B.C. government appears to be moving toward a model that would simply replace the taxi monopoly with a one-app monopoly that favours taxis,” Tostenson says in the release.Other anchor members of the coalition include the Vancouver Economic Commission, BC Chamber of Commerce, Finger Food Studios, the BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association and the Urban Development Institute.Anne McMullin, president and chief executive officer of the institute’s Pacific region says balanced, well-planned communities depend on convenient, reliable and affordable transportation options.“The Urban Development Institute is strongly encouraging the B.C. government to follow the lead of over 40 other Canadian jurisdictions that already benefit from ride-sharing, and take immediate action to introduce a framework to enable a competitive market for ride-sharing that increases choice for passengers,” McMullin says.last_img read more

OSU junior safety Vonn Bell (11) dives toward the end zone after interception in a game against Minnesota on Nov. 7. OSU won, 28-14. Credit: Samantha Hollingshead | Photo EditorThe number of vacancies on the Ohio State depth chart keeps growing, as the count of starters not returning has climbed to 16 on Tuesday with Vonn Bell’s declaration for the NFL draft. “I have decided to make myself eligible and enter the 2016 NFL Draft,” the junior safety said in a press release through the university.  “It has been an honor and a privilege to play at the best university in the country, to play for the best coach in the country, and to help bring the 2014 national championship to The Ohio State University and the best fans in the country.”A two-year starter for the Scarlet and Gray, Bell finishes his career in Columbus with 176 total tackles, nine interceptions and two fumble recoveries. In the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame on New Year’s Day, the Rossville, Georgia, native recorded a pair of tackles. Bell found his way to the end zone twice in 2015, the first on a 14-yard fumble recovery against Hawaii and the second on a 15-yard interception return versus Minnesota. In what turned out to be his final collegiate season, the 5-foot-11 Bell received first-team All-American honors by the Associated Press. Bell’s announcement comes just hours after redshirt junior wide receiver Michael Thomas announced his plans to turn pro, as well. The duo joins seven other OSU underclassmen who have declared for April’s draft. In addition to the nine underclassmen leaving Columbus, seven starters that were seniors will no longer be with the program in 2016. Bell’s declaration is likely to be the last one for coach Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes, as all the players rumored to be mulling to turn pro have done so thus far. Bell’s draft projection varies amongst analysts but many have him graded as a second- or third-round pick. “My time here has been very special to me and my family,” Bell said in the release. “And I thank all Buckeye fans for their love and support.” read more
