19 February 2008The top United Nations envoy to Sudan told the Security Council today that the implementation of the January 2005 comprehensive peace agreement ending the long-running north-south civil war remains on track, despite being behind schedule. The top United Nations envoy to Sudan told the Security Council today that the implementation of the January 2005 comprehensive peace agreement ending the long-running north-south civil war remains on track, despite being behind schedule.Ashraf Qazi, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative to Sudan, said the overall security in the ceasefire zone remains relatively stable, but tensions between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) actually increased along the current boundary between northern and southern Sudan.Mr. Qazi warned that while the working relationship between the two parties – which fought the 21-year civil war until 2005 – was relatively cordial, it suffered from a significant lack of trust and confidence. But the envoy pointed to several important upcoming milestones for the accord (CPA) ending the war, including the conduct of a national census and then the holding of national elections next year. The most recent UN report on the implementation of the CPA found that major challenges lie ahead, but praised the leaders of both sides for demonstrating a willingness to resolve their differences through dialogue. As many as two million people were killed and 4.5 million others displaced during Sudan’s north-south civil war, which is separate from the conflict in the country’s western region of Darfur. read more

by News Staff Posted Oct 15, 2012 8:06 am MDT Softbank of Japan says deal reached to acquire 70 per cent of Sprint for $20.1 billion AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email TOKYO – Softbank Corp. has reached a deal to buy 70 per cent of U.S. mobile carrier Sprint Nextel Corp. for $20.1 billion in the largest ever foreign acquisition by a Japanese company. The agreement, announced Monday at a joint news conference in Tokyo by Softbank President Masayoshi Son and Sprint Chief Executive Dan Hesse, will bring together the third biggest mobile carriers of both Japan and the U.S., underlining the growth ambitions of Softbank, which has made a series of acquisitions over the last couple of decades. It also shows how the strong yen, which is usually seen as a negative for export-reliant Japan Inc., has boosted the overseas purchasing power of Japanese corporations as a stagnant domestic market pushes them to look abroad for growth. The Sprint buy pushes Japan’s overseas acquisitions so far this year, including debt of the acquired companies, to over $100 billion, nearly double the same period last year, according to deal tracking company Dealogic. The deal was given a green light by the boards of both companies. It still needs approval from Sprint shareholders and U.S. regulators. Softbank said the transaction is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. The combination of Softbank and Sprint will tie with AT&T for world’s No. 3 mobile company by revenue after China Mobile and Verizon, according to Softbank.Son said the investment made sense because the U.S. is the world’s biggest market in smartphones, and it was still growing. The news of the deal, which leaked late last week, had spooked investors worried about such a big investment and sent Softbank shares lower by about a third in recent sessions. Standard & Poor’s had placed Softbank on “credit watch negative,” meaning its credit rating could be downgraded. Shares of Sprint shot up in anticipation of the offer.Sprint has struggled in recent years to compete with Verizon and AT&T. The company has $21 billion in long-term debt, and has launched a costly network restructuring and signed a long-term contract to buy $15.5 billion worth of iPhones from Apple Inc. over four years. But Son said Sprint has been recovering on its own lately and is now getting cash, thanks to his investment. Son has a record of buying struggling mobile companies and turning them around, including the Japan unit of Vodafone.Under the agreement with Sprint, $12.1 billion will go to Sprint shareholders and $8 billion will be fresh capital, which will serve to strengthen Sprint’s balance sheet and networks, Son said. Softbank is offering $7.30 a share for the existing shares, about 27 per cent above Friday’s closing price of $5.73.Son has made no secret that he has been looking abroad for new growth as the Japanese mobile market has been stagnant for years. Softbank has been an exception in racking up strong profit despite such stagnation, largely on the popularity of the iPhone.Softbank was the first carrier to offer the iPhone in Japan. The iPhone has been such a hit in Japan it has shaped Softbank’s brand image and helped it lure customers away from its two bigger rivals. Son said earlier this year that he is determined Softbank will overtake NTT DoCoMo, the longtime No. 1, and a former government monopoly.Son said the advent of smartphones means that the U.S. and Japanese markets have much in common, and the two companies could benefit and learn from each other. They can also work together on faster speed “4G” mobile networks called LTE. Softbank recently bought smaller Japanese rival eAccess, largely to gain LTE networks.By joining forces, Sprint and Softbank will become one of the top world smartphone providers, gaining greater bargaining power with the manufacturers of the gadgets and network equipment suppliers.“This is a transformative transaction for Sprint that creates immediate value for our stockholders, while providing an opportunity to participate in the future growth of a stronger, better capitalized Sprint going forward,” Hesse said.Son, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, said he was only 16 when he ventured alone to the U.S.“I am happy to be able to tell you today of my big comeback to the U.S.,” he said. “This is going to be an even bigger challenge.”Before Monday’s deal, the biggest overseas acquisition by a Japanese company was Japan Tobacco Inc.’s purchase of Gallaher Group of Great Britain in 2007 for about $19 billion. But the strength of the yen, with the dollar plunging to 78 yen from about 85 yen two years ago, is encouraging Japanese companies to go shopping.Son, an unusually risk-taking and innovative executive in a corporate culture that tends to favour a staid conservative approach, acknowledged the big question is whether his overseas foray will succeed.“I am confident,” he said.___Follow Yuri Kageyama on Twitter: www.twitter.com/yurikageyama read more

Loonie continues to soar on rate hike expectations, as North American indexes slide TORONTO – The Canadian dollar continued to climb Thursday as speculation grew that the Bank of Canada is ready to raise its key interest rate sooner rather than later. The loonie touched 77 cents US for the first time since February during the session before pulling back at the close to an average price of 76.83 cents US, trading 0.26 of a U.S. cent higher. The increase was also helped by an uptick in oil prices, with the August crude contract adding 19 cents at US$44.93 per barrel.Comments from Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz on Wednesday raised expectations that a rate increase could come as early as next month’s central bank meeting on July 12.The bank had lowered its rate twice in 2015 to the very low level of 0.5 per cent to help offset the effects of the lower oil prices.Chief market strategist Colin Cieszynski of CMC Markets Canada says Poloz’s remarks point to the prospective trend that central banks around the world may start moving on rates. The U.S. Federal Reserve has already hiked its interest rates three times in about six months, and earlier this month, suggested it will raise rates again later this year.“Ideally what the Bank of Canada is looking for is some kind of sweet spot for rates,” said Cieszynski.“A few years back when the loonie was up at par (with the U.S. dollar), companies were really, really struggling,” he said. “When it was down in the low 70s, it was tough for consumers.”He says he expects the Canadian dollar to “take a break” over the next few days because it has risen a full U.S. cent against the greenback in two days. The gain in the currency Thursday came as the S&P/TSX composite index shed 142.16 points, or almost one per cent, to 15,213.42, with nearly all sectors ending in the red.It was also a negative session in New York. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 167.58 points to 21,287.03 and the broader S&P 500 index fell 20.99 points to 2,419.70.The Nasdaq composite index dropped 90.06 points to 6,144.35 as U.S. technology companies continued to decline for another day.Elsewhere in commodities, the August gold contract retreated $3.30 to US$1,245.80 an ounce, the August natural gas contract dipped five cents at US$3.04 per mmBTU, and the September copper contract added two cents at US$2.70 a pound.Follow @LindaNguyenTO on Twitter. by Linda Nguyen, The Canadian Press Posted Jun 29, 2017 9:38 am MDT Last Updated Jun 29, 2017 at 3:20 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email read more

OSU redshirt junior outfielder Alex Bayne (left). Credit: Courtesy of OSU“Small but mighty” might be the most fitting adage to describe Ohio State softball player Alex Bayne. Despite standing a mere 5-foot-5, the redshirt junior is currently leading her team in home runs and RBIs after three weekends of play.“She’s a monster in the weight room,” said OSU coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly.Bayne, a Texas native, played her freshman year at Marshall University in West Virginia but said she did not find her fit in the team and culture. After visiting a friend at OSU, she fell in love with the community and decided to transfer.“I saw the team was having open tryouts, and I was lucky enough for them to want me to come on,” Bayne said.Schoenly already envisioned Bayne, who took a year off from playing in 2014, as a great addition to the team prior to tryouts.“She pestered me over email for seven months, saying, ‘Coach, I want to try out for the team,’” Schoenly said. “After, she came into my office and had zero expectations. She was willing to do whatever we needed her to do.”This conversation showed Schoenly the type of selfless player the outfielder was — and continues to be — as she steps into a larger leadership role this season.“My close friends last year were the leaders, and I just followed in their footsteps and communicated with my coaches about what they and my team need out of me,” Bayne said.Bayne, who studies strategic communication, was given the OSU Sportsmanship Award in 2015, in addition to being named a scholar-athlete. Because of her natural leadership skills, her teammates nominated her to be a captain despite having just a lone season donning the scarlet and gray. Senior teammate Maddy McIntyre, who ultimately earned the captain role, indicated her enthusiasm about what Bayne continues to bring to the team.“Bayne has kind of taken it to a new level this year. She’s really stepped up into a leadership role,” McIntyre said. “She’s just the embodiment of empathy and so mature beyond her years.”Like McIntyre, Schoenly also described Bayne as lighthearted and commended her incessant dedication to the team.“She’s never going to leave anybody out. She’s a part of every group on the team,” Schoenly said, mentioning how Bayne will offer to give teammates rides or help the pitchers out at any chance she gets.Schoenly also recalled a game against Nebraska last season when Bayne’s commitment first started to show.“I put her in to pinch hit and she hit a double. I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to keep her in,’ and then she hit another double,” Schoenly said.Within two weeks, Bayne had earned a starting position, and by the end of the season, she was hitting .375 with 17 RBIs.“A few games after Nebraska, she hit two home runs against Ohio University,” Schoenly said. “Because of her commitment to the process, she was more than ready for the opportunity.”Those two home runs were just the beginning of the slugger’s ascension to being one of the Buckeyes’ most dominant and consistent hitters. As she takes on a starting role, Bayne said she wants to focus on what her team needs rather than being only a big hitter.“Hopefully, I can continue to keep doing what I’ve been doing, but I’m not trying to think too big,” Bayne said. “Just bat on ball.”McIntyre laughed when asked what she expects from Bayne as the season moves forward.“If she could hit three home runs every weekend, we would love that,” she joked. Regardless of whether Bayne actually hits three home runs per weekend, she said she plans to keep supporting her teammates no matter what happens. “I just want to be there for my team through the ups and downs of it all,” she said.Bayne is planning to use her fifth year of eligibility on the diamond to attend OSU for graduate school, where she hopes to prepare for a career in either a communication program at a university or an athletics public relations firm.To Schoenly, who praised her player’s outlook on life, Bayne is the precedent for the younger players when it comes to making the most out of any opportunity.“She has this ‘I’m not taking anything for granted’ attitude,” Schoenly said. “She is really competitive, though.”Right now, Bayne’s competitive edge is the epicenter of the Buckeyes’ dynamic start to the season. The Scarlet and Gray are 9-4 with a chance to bolster that mark during a four-game stint in Tempe, Arizona, beginning Friday. When asked about whether her choice to come to OSU was the right one, Bayne’s eyes lit up as she started to grin.“It’s been one of the best decisions of my life,” she said. read more

first_imgSony was expected to release its Nasne media hub back on July 19 in Japan. But one day before the release, Sony recalled all the units from retailers due to a defect with the device. It later turned out that the hard drives the Nasne used had been damaged in transit and there was no guarantee they would work. That’s surprising considering each Nasne would be secured inside packaging, with both the device and packaging being tested for handling the odd bump or drop. A teardown of one of the Nasne units that didn’t get returned has revealed the most likely reason why the hard drives malfunctioned so easily, though.Inside the Nasne there’s a single mainboard with the tuner and hard drive mounted directly on to it. The drive is actually a 7mm 2.5-inch Hitachi 5400rpm unit with a 500GB capacity. The cause of the damage to the drive looks to be the method used to attach it to the mainboard.Typically you see a drive either mounted in a bay and then attached to a board or screwed on to the board using some form of shock absorbent rubber washers. That’s not the case in the Nasne. Images of the teardown reveal the drive has been screwed directly on to the board just with screws.Using this method of attachment means any vibration traveling through the mainboard is also going to be felt fully by the drive. So if the Nasne is dropped or hit, the sensitive hard drive components will feel the full force of the impact. It’s no surprise then that the hard drives stopped working if a serious drop occurred during transit, and it looks to be an expensive mistake Sony could have avoided just by employing some shock absorption in the drive mounting.Read more at Tech-On!last_img read more

Trumps Rigged Vote Claims Resonate With Some In Texas GOP

first_imgREUTERS/Lucas JacksonRepublican U.S. presidential nominee Donald Trump speaks during the first debate with Democratic U.S. presidential nominee Hillary Clinton at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, on Sept, 26, 2016.As Donald Trump intensifies his claims that widespread voter fraud this November could derail his election, he is finding a sympathetic constituency among some Texas Republicans who have long sounded the alarm about mischief at the ballot box.“We do share a concern” with Trump, Texas GOP Chairman Tom Mechler said Tuesday. “We know it’s out there, and we know it’s massive. We’re doing everything we can to identify and to prepare for it.” Houston Public Media’s Coverage of Election 2016As Trump’s campaign has tumbled, the Republican presidential nominee has increasingly complained that the election is “rigged” against him. In recent days, he has been more vocal than ever describing a conspiracy against his candidacy that includes “large scale” voter fraud, although proven cases in Texas or elsewhere are rare — and virtually unheard of on the scale Trump is suggesting. The spectre of voter fraud has factored prominently in Texas politics for years, raised largely by Republicans who have won virtually every statewide election for almost two decades. The state’s controlling party aggressively seeks to root out alleged fraud, while Democrats decry such GOP efforts as a ploy to suppress the vote.Passed in 2011, Texas’ strict voter ID law repeatedly landed the state on the national stage, most recently earlier this year when a federal appeals court found it discriminatory. If anyone is trying to rig the presidential election, Texas is not the place to do it, according to state election officials. The secretary of state’s office noted Tuesday that Texas’ election system is “highly decentralized,” making it very difficult for a successful statewide conspiracy. “The election isn’t conducted on a statewide level but in each of Texas’ 254 counties, which use a variety of voting machines and methods,” Alicia Pierce, a spokeswoman for the secretary of state’s office, said in a statement. “Due to the decentralization, plus the layers of cross-checking done with election results, prearranging the outcome of a statewide election would be essentially impossible.”Pressed on how widespread he believes voter fraud is in Texas, Mechler said he does not believe it is present in every county but insisted there are “pockets of this state that are a real problem, and we have to watch.” He declined to name the areas while speaking with the Tribune at the Bexar County GOP headquarters, where signs adorn the walls asking for poll watchers on Election Day. To be sure, not every Texas Republican is fully echoing Trump’s claims about far-reaching voter fraud. That includes U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, who kept the focus on the need for heavy turnout when asked Tuesday if he was worried about the integrity of the election this November in the Lone Star State. “Voter fraud has long been a challenge in America, but the best way to combat voter fraud is for voters to turn out in such overwhelming numbers that corrupt politicians can’t steal an election,” Cruz told the Tribune on Tuesday, leaving an event in San Marcos. He declined to comment further when asked whether he specifically shared Trump’s concerns about the election being “rigged.”For months, Trump has been making vague allegations that his opponents — the media, Democrats and even members of his own party — are trying to steal the election from him. In recent days, however, he’s sharpened his focus to voter fraud, tweeting Monday that “of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day.” The problem has gotten a fresh look in recent days in Texas amid reports that the state is investigating voter fraud in Tarrant County, Texas’ third most populous county. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the probe involves mail-in ballots, which do not require ID and have long been singled out as vulnerable to fraud. Proven cases of voter fraud are highly uncommon in Texas. Between the 2012 primaries and July, the attorney general’s office prosecuted only 15 cases after receiving more than 360 allegations in the same period.Among the state’s most outspoken voices on voter fraud is Gov. Greg Abbott, who made a point of fighting it as attorney general and called it “rampant” earlier this year. “Texans will crack down on cheating at the ballot box,” Abbott tweeted Sunday in response to a story about the situation in Tarrant County. On Trump’s claims about voter fraud this November, however, Abbott’s office deferred comment Tuesday to the secretary of state’s office. Abbott’s successor in the attorney general’s office, Ken Paxton, also had no comment Tuesday. All the while, Texas Democrats have countered that Republicans’ voter fraud concerns are insincere, truly meant to push discriminatory legislation while whipping up their base. They repeated that Tuesday, adding that Trump “knows his campaign is in a tailspin — and as a result, he’s weaving a web of excuses with dangerous charges that strike at the core of our country’s democracy.”“The real voter fraud is Texas Republicans’ relentless effort to keep Texas’ diverse new majority away from the voting booth,” Manny Garcia, the party’s deputy executive director, said in a statement. “For years, Texas Republicans have made it harder for people to vote. They’ve clung to power, winning the very elections they say are rampant with voter fraud.”As another day came to a close Tuesday in which Trump complained about the deck being stacked against him, Texas Republicans were again warning about voter fraud. In an email about the Tarrant County investigation, conservative activist Michael Quinn Sullivan urged supporters to fight for election reform. “Turns out,” Sullivan wrote, “elections really are being rigged.” This article originally appeared in The Texas Tribune at https://www.texastribune.org/2016/10/18/texas-republicans-trumps-voter-fraud-concerns-noth/. Court rules a 1565 wreck off the Florida coast belongs to France

first_imgTwo years after a U.S. salvage company announced finding a wrecked ship off Cape Canaveral, Florida, that had three bronze cannons — each worth more than $1 million — and beautiful marble monuments, a Florida judge has ruled that the submerged wreck and its artifacts are the exclusive property of the nation that built the ship and set it to sea in the 16th century: France. The ship is believed to be one of a fleet of French ships, led by the explorer Jean Ribault, which sailed to the New World to form colonies in America in 1562 and 1565.The Florida marine salvage company Global Marine Enterprises (GME) that located the wreck did not, of course, want to lose the rights to it, and argued that the identity of the ship couldn’t definitively be established.Portrait of the French Mariner, Jean Ribault (1520 – 1565)Moreover, GME theorized that “Spanish raiders had looted the cannons and monuments from the early French colony at Fort Caroline in Florida in 1565 — and so, they were on board a Spanish ship, probably bound for Cuba, when the ship went down off the Florida coast,” according to Fox News. The magistrate of the U.S. Federal Court didn’t agree. The court ruled that the found ship is very likely La Trinite, the 32-gun flagship of French captain Jean Ribault. The disaster of Ribault’s fleet gave France’s rival, Spain, the opportunity to strengthen its hold on Fort Caroline and claim Florida for Spain and its ruler, Philip II.Ribault is wrecked on the coast of FloridaOne historical theory is that Ribault was in that area trying to reinforce a French colony in what is now Jacksonville.France was in the middle of violent religious wars between Catholics and Protestants at the time. Ribault was a Huguenot navigator who was trying to establish a Protestant colony in the southeast region of America. In 1562 Ribault led an expedition that founded the outpost of Charlesfort in present-day South Carolina. When he later tried to strengthen the colony in Florida, violence broke out.Ribault and some of his men survived the hurricane that wrecked the ships and made it to the coast, but they did not survive the Spanish. When the Catholic soldiers learned he was a Protestant, Ribault was killed on October 12, 1565, in a massacre.Marker at Fort Matanzas National Monument showing the location where Jean Ribault and his men were slaughtered by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in September 1565. Glass negative. Now Ribault’s flagship is the subject of tremendous excitement.John de Bry, director of the Center for Historical Archaeology, a nonprofit organization, earlier said, “If it turns out to be ‘La Trinite,’ it is the most important, historically and archaeologically, the most important shipwreck ever found in North America.”The ship has “three bronze cannons with markings from the reign of King Henri II, who ruled right before Charles IX; and a stone monument with the French coat of arms that was to be used to claim the new territory,” reports the Daily Mail.122 yr old British shipwreck found buried on Brazilian beachFinding La Trinite has been a dream for years.Several years ago, an expedition from the state-run St. Augustine Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program attempted to locate the wreck but failed.Marine archaeologist Chuck Meide, who led that trip, said of the later success “this is one of the most important shipwreck discoveries we have had in Florida,” according to the Daily Mail.GME, which succeeded in finding the wreck, is unhappy with the court’s ruling. Robert Pritchett, the owner of GME, says “he has invested $3 million in this gig and now runs the risk of getting nothing for his trouble,” according to media reports.“It is not a French military vessel. Tell France to prove it. They cannot. I can tell you France has no proof of anything,” said Pritchett.Read another story from us: Finally, after 70 years divers located the wreckage U-966French authorities, who do not want to disclose exactly where the wreck is, call the find a major discovery that deserves careful and rigorous analysis.James Goold, the attorney representing the French government, told the press that the July 2018 ruling will protect artifacts from the wreck from being privately salvaged.Nancy Bilyeau, a former staff editor at Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, and InStyle, has written a trilogy of historical thrillers for Touchstone Books. No headway reported on Riviera Maya Amikoo Theme Park

Since then, other announcements have been made, but news of progress has been nonexistent. Máximo García Rocha, undersecretary of Tourism Promotion in Quintana Roo said that the project was not only officially presented at Los Pinos, but also before Governor Carlos Joaquín González where the business groups that promoted the park announced that by August 2018, the first phase would be opened since they wanted Peña Nieto to inaugurate it before concluding his term. “We do not have any information that tells us it’s canceled. The only thing is that the deadlines that they set for their inauguration are already expired, and we do not have a report on the progress of the work,” said Garcia Rocha adding that with projects of this magnitude, there are always unforeseen events with Amikoo being projected as one of the largest hotel investments in the country. Although there is no indication of its cancellation, the Amikoo megaproject, which is a theme park composed of a complex of hotels and shops, continues to be delayed. center_img The official project was presented in November of 2017 where it was announced that $840 million USD would be invested in the complex through an alliance between the firms IUSA and Grupo Gala. Riviera Maya, Q.R. — It has been more than a year since the announcement of the Amikoo Theme Park set for Riviera Maya, however, development has been nonexistent.
